4 Tips for De-Stressing

Everyone has those moments–When there’s too much going on, your mind is in a million places at once, and it becomes overwhelming. Take some time to yourself! Clear your mind, and you’ll realize you have much more energy to tackle your to-do list. Here are some simple tips you should consider every time you feel a little stressed out.

1. Stop, and take a deep breath
This may seem like a no brainer, but seriously give it a try! Taking a minute to breath will really help calm you down and it will allow you to retarget your stress into motivation to take action. We suggest 3 deep breaths and thinking of the word “relax.” Inhale on “re”– exhale on “lax.”  This may seem a little silly, but you will notice right away how much it really helps!

2. Organize your to-do list
Stress can be cause by many different factors. Sometimes simply having too much to do and not knowing what order to complete it in is all it takes to stress you out. Before you start diving into everything that you need to get done, plan for a minute. Think about which things will take the longest, and which will take the shortest. We like to get longer tasks out of the way before tackling smaller tasks.

3. Chew a stick of gum
Research has shown that people who are stressed, feel less stress when they are chewing gum. Chewing increases blood flow to the brain which make us feel more alert and can distract us from stressors. Next time you’re feeling stressed, pop a piece of gum in your mouth, and start chewing!

4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help
When you have too much on your plate and don’t think you’ll be able to get everything done on time, sometimes it’s best to just ask someone else to help. Instead of getting overly stressed about everything that needs to get done, concentrate on doing some of the tasks well, and ask a colleague or friend to help with the rest! Splitting up your tasks allows you to do better on each thing instead of getting everything done, but not to its full potential.

Next time you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t panic. Take a deep breath, organize your tasks, chew a piece of gum, and when all else fails don’t hesitate to ask for a helping hand! You’ll be amazed at how much these little things can help to de-stress your mind.
